Having looked across at the island from Italy’s toe last year I vowed to find a way…. I found a very cheap looking hotel, Villa Kristina, www.hvk.it with excellent reports on www.tripadvisor.com and flights to Catania from Manchester with Thomsonfly, all booked over the internet. I couldn’t understand why a small hotel with a swimming pool and every single room with a sea Etna view could be so much cheaper than everywhere else – I still don’t! Other hotels were charging an average of £18 per person per night for these views. We arrived in the resort of Taormina www.taormina-sicily.it which is on a plateau overlooking the coast and snow-topped Etna towers behind. The hotel was indeed small – 27 rooms only – but the staff were as friendly as I have met anywhere, the room was quite small but adequate and very clean and the same with the bathroom. The breakfasts were gorgeous with bread baked on the premises and the swimming pool an absolute delight. The views are simply stunning. The only slight drawback was that it was in an elevated position – most places in Taormina are, it is most definitely not a place for the infirm or
